California Governor Newsom has allowed for emergency tax or fee relief from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) for businesses directly affected by COVID-19. Relief may include filing and payment extensions or penalty and interest waivers for many taxes, including sales and use tax.
Highlights of the Sales Tax relief provisions:
California taxpayers can claim a sales tax extension, but must go online to claim it, as it is not automatic
The extension allows sales tax filers to file and pay all taxes due between March 15, 2020 and June 15, 2020 by June 15, 2020 and receive no penalty
Taxpayers can claim the extension even if the return they are filing is late (as long as it is no later than June 15, 2020)
You may submit a relief request if you received a billing notice or statement of account from the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA). If you recently submitted your return and/or payment, allow five business days for CDTFA to process your electronic return and/or payment submissions or up to six weeks if mailed, prior to submitting your relief request. Your filing and payment must be posted to your account in order for your request to be considered
If your relief request is approved, generally, you should receive a refund within 8 to 12 weeks; however, if you have other liabilities, your refund may be applied to these liabilities first
